1994
I
signed a contract with Madgwick International F 3000 team. The championship
was new for me and the team, but we developed all the time and finished
a total 11th with a podium finish at SPA.
1995
Despite
many offers from other teams, I decided to stay with Madgwick. I have
always believed in long-term relationships. The reward came at the end
of the season with a victory at Magny Cours. I also captured three pole
positions and finished third in the Championship.
1996
I This year everything went my way - at least at the beginning. I switched teams to Super Nova Racing. When 10 out of 11 races were over I had been on the podium eight times with victories at Nürburgring, Hockenheim and Silverstone plus two second- and three third-place finishes. The last race of the season was again at Hockenheim and the only challenger for the championship was the German driver, Jürg Müller. I won that race as well but to my teams and many others' great surprise, I was disqualified because of too tough driving when I had passed Müller in the middle of the race. Obviously we appealed but several months later a FIA court awarded Müller the championship. I finished second in front of Ricardo Zonta.

This was the greatest disappointment of my racing career. The only comfort
I have is that I won more races than any other driver and that I still
get E-mails from colleagues and fans who think I was robbed of the title.

However, the success led to my being contacted by several Formula 1 teams.
After discussions with five teams I decided to sign a test contract with
TWR, which was just about to acquire the late Ligier Team, today Prost.
Unfortunately for me the negotiations broke down when the French Government
opposed the sale of the French team to England. Instead, TWR bought Arrows
Grand Prix team and my contract was transferred. I quickly realized that
at that time the team was neither financially nor technically strong enough
to be successful and decided to take the risk and leave after only three
test days. I stuck to my strategy of only driving cars in which I could
win, even if I had nowhere to go in the middle of a season. I packed my
bags and went to the USA to see if there were any opportunities for me
there.
1997
Almost immediately, Galles Racing gave me the chance to substitute for
the injured Davy Jones in Indy Racing League. With very limited experience
in oval racing I made my debut at the Phoenix 200. I finished 11th after
having hit the wall while leading on lap 145. I learned the hard way that
there is no mercy if you make the slightest mistake on an oval. I was
not too disappointed because people had told me that there are two types
of drivers on ovals - the ones who have hit the wall and the ones who
are about to. Unfortunately later during the season I found out that there
is also a type who hits the wall more than once. However, I led 50 percent
of the races I started in and my best result of the season was fifth at
both Charlotte and Loudon.
