1988

I moved up to the Swedish Formula 3 Championship. I won one race and had four podium finishes.

1989

This year, I competed in both the British and Swedish Formula 3 Championship and scored three victories.

1990

I changed to International Formula Opel Lotus Championship. The first year was tough with only one podium finish.

1991

This year we were better prepared and I managed three podium finishes. However, we still did not fully manage to keep up with the best teams. Pedro Lamy won the championship this year.

After several international years with a limited budget, I decided to change strategies and only drive in series in which I could have as good a car as the best one. It did not matter in what or where I competed. The only important thing was to win.

1992

To find better financial support, I moved back to Sweden. Immediately I established contact with Renault, which was about to start the international one-type series Clio Cup in Scandinavia. I joined and won nine of the 10 races and the championship.

1993

This year I divided my time between Europe and the USA. I participated in four Renault Clio Eurocup races and won two of them. It gave me a lot of valuable publicity because some of the races were support-races to Formula 1 Grand Prix events. My debut in the USA came in another one-type class - Xerex Barber Saab. I managed to win six races and the championship. In all, I won 60 percent of the races I competed in during 1992-93.

My strategy worked and I started to feel comfortable on the Podium, whatever they threw at me. Actually, it was really pleasant sometimes!

At the end of the season, I got the fantastic offer of testing the Williams-Renault F1 World Champion winning car. The test, which was carried out on a rainy day at Paul Ricard in France, went so well that both the team and the Swedish press reported that I had surpassed all expectations. The door to sponsors for a full season in International Formula 3000 was suddenly open.
