« Back den 18 maj 2005 Back on track Columbus, May 17, 2005 Dear friends, Talk about how fate can turn out, short of perhaps a Hollywood film producer I doubt anyone could have “dreamt up” this one. As most of you know, little over one year ago Buddy Rice replaced me after I had my accident. Last week Buddy had an accident during practice for the “Indy 500” and will not be able to drive in this year’s race. Team Rahal/Letterman called me late last night and asked if I could fill in for Buddy for Indy 500. To go from a “home dad” to a “220 mp/h dog fighter” in no time at all is a tough and big decision so all I could do was to let my heart decide. That means, “the replaced driver will replace the replacement driver”, or something like that. At the same time I feel sorry for Buddy since I know how much he wants to defend his Indy title from last year but on the bright side he’s young and a great driver and will be back for the following races. Judging from previous practice and qualifying the team and cars are great too so if I am up for the task I think we have a chance at being competitive. Of course, it does not matter how fast we will go for qualifying, the best starting position will be 23rd since the 22 first positions for the race was locked in on pole day last weekend and cannot be changed. This is of course a 500 mile race so starting position is less of a problem but of course it’s always better to start up front, but bottom line what matters is to be in the right place lap 200 on May 29th. I am looking forward to once again take the green flag in the world biggest car race and also do it with the team I’ve spent 3 years in IndyCar racing with and had some of the best results in my career (4 wins, 6 pole positions, lots of podium finishes, fastest laps and also voted by the American motoring press “The Worlds Best Oval Race Driver”). Now there’s a lot of stuff that will have to be prepared in a short time and I will leave for Indianapolis first thing in the morning. First off I have to pass the medical examination, get the necessary licenses and also arrange for overalls, helmets etc., and make a good seat before starting practicing on Wednesday 18th of May, weather allowing. With little time to prepare this is probably one of the greatest challenges I will ever take on as a driver. There’s nothing like a good challenge! Talk to you soon, Kenny Brack kennybrack.com KB |
