Band Members
Kenny Brack, lead and rythm guitar
Kenny
Brack's love for rock n' rock actually started before his love for the
racetrack. The driver of the No. 15 Pioneer/Miller Lite Honda Dallara
Indy car grew up in Sweden with a musical family. Kenny's father, Bert,
played in a local band with Kenny's family and, by age nine, the younger
Brack was learning the guitar. With bands like Abba making the international
music scene, the Swedish community was enthralled with contemporary music
and young Kenny followed suit. But Kenny was interested in a different
musical form from his peers - blues and rock n' roll from the 1950s and
1960s where Chuck Berry was the big influence. As Kenny was learning how
to strum his guitar, the blonde kid was beginning to pursue his current
occupation - racing. As his racing career grew, his music became a great
relaxation. Winner of the 1999 Indy 500, Kenny admits that if he weren't
racing he probably would have pursued a career in music.
Charlie Bushor, drums
Racing
and rock & roll play equal parts in the life of Charlie Bushor, former
drummer for rock band The Why Store. Charlie grew up doing the two things
he still loves most, racing and playing music. He raced a quarter midget
and was state and regional champion several times with more than 100 feature
wins to his credit. His racing was interrupted when he won a music scholarship
to Anderson University and later joined The Why Store, releasing the #1
AAA hit, "Lack of Water." He's written instructional books about
drumming and currently performs with a variety of local musicians including
Kenny Brack and the Subwoofers. He's also re-started his racing career
and ended up finishing last season third in the USAC Regional Rookie of
the Year points chase. He had a 12th place finish at the Inaugural NAMARS
500, plus an invitation to Thunder in the Dome. The year 2003 looks like
a full-scale assault on the SCCA American Sedan National Championship
plus assorted USAC and NAMARS open wheel events.
Gene Deer, rythm and lead guitar
Gene
started playing guitar at the age of 14 ... and just keeps on going. He
started out at parties and clubs and progressed to large festivals, concerts
and biker bashes all across his home state of Indiana. That quickly expanded
to include most of the Midwest and Southern United States. By 1992, having
already played many of the major blues festivals and blues and rock clubs
in the South and the Midwest, he had made his mark on the Indiana and
Midwest music scene. He was voted "Best Blues Artist in Indiana"
by the Indianapolis Star-News and is known as "Indiana's own blues/rock
guitar legend." Now, having opened concerts for numerous artists
on the road, he's played everywhere from California and New Mexico to
Memphis and Atlanta. Gene is a very confident and accomplished musician
and is a life-timer in the music biz. "I am in this for the long
train ride ... you never stop payin' dues."
Laz Denes, acoustic guitar
Laz
Denes has been part of the racing community since 1986, having worked
with NASCAR, CART and IRL teams and sponsors to promote motorsports activities.
In his current gig as head of public relations for Mo Nunn Racing, Laz
works closely with Tora Takagi who drives the #12 Pioneer/Mo Nunn Racing
car and Felipe Giaffone in the #21 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing car, making
sure that both drivers get enough time on the track and in front of the
cameras. His other team is Kenny Brack and the Subwoofers where he plays
guitar. Laz was an original member with Kenny of the band RPM, which played
last year on the CART circuit. He also plays for Southern California based
Zombie Hit Squad.
Kathy Prather, vocals
Kathy
Prather made her public singing debut in 1982 in Dallas with local legend
Robert Lee Kolb and the Local Heroes. She continued to perform around
the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area and throughout Texas, playing
with other bands as well as with her own band, Kathy Prather and the Band.
Kathy gave up her weekly gigs in 1998 when she began traveling on the
racing circuit where she is currently public relations director for Access
Motorsports, but she didn't give up music. Always willing to sit in with
local favorites, she has been known to jump on stage with Kenny Lee Lewis
(Steve Miller Band), Greg Martin (Kentucky Headhunters), Ed King (formerly
with Lynyrd Skynyrd, or Jack Sonni (Dire Straits). Now she's bringing
together her love of music and her full-time job in the racing community
as singer for Kenny Brack and the Subwoofers.
Kelsey Smith, vocals
Kelsey
Smith's unique voice was first noticed on her 21st birthday at an open
mic night by David Cocalis of Real Eyes, Inc. and Speakeasy Studios who
hired her to front his group for what became an eight-year tour. The four-piece
nightclub band averaged 200 shows per year including notable events like:
Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Indianapolis 500 infield shows, Pacer Basketball
rallies, Indianapolis Indian baseball games, Circle Fest and New Year's
Eve for the Chicago Social Club. Kelsey has also done session work both
as a vocalist and lyricist, collaborating on projects ranging from Hip
Hop tracks with Moe Z through the range of genres, to the outside of country.
Her résumé includes jingles and voice-overs for regional
and national businesses. She wrote and released the eclectic CD, "Songs
from your Waitress". While living in London, she recorded vocal hooks
and house tracks with DJ/producer Tristan Cook and R & B songs with
Telstar artist/producer Andy Mitchell. She also performed live as part
of the 8-piece Junior Birdmen band. Smith returned to the States in time
to join the Subwoofers and to foster a new original show and generate
more material with longtime songwriting partners Rob Calder and Pete Wilhoit.
Smokin' David Lyle Wyatt, bass
"Smokin'
Dave" Wyatt is an avid racing fan who claims to love everything if
it has "two or more wheels and goes real fast." He's played
bass guitar professionally for more than 25 years and has opened for numerous
musicians including B.B. King and Al Green. While he plays a variety of
different styles, his favorites are blues and rock and roll, which make
him a great addition to Kenny Brack and the Subwoofers. He currently plays
for The Gordon Bonham Blues Band, The Larry Crane Band and Kenny Brack
and the Subwoofers. He's played in honky tonks and dives all over the
U.S. and Eastern Canada and now looks forward to bringing blues and rock
and roll to the racing community.
